Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: ,;known in the West as Leo Tolstoy) (September 9, 1828 November 20, 1910) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Anna Karenina: Anna Karenina tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, the novel's seven major characters create a dynamic imbalance, playing out the contrasts of city and country life and all the variations on love and family happiness. War and Peace: The work is epic in scale and is regarded as one of the most important works of world literature. It is considered Tolstoy's finest literary achievement. War and Peace delineates in graphic detail events surrounding the French invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, as seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families. Youth: Youth is the third novel in Leo Tolstoy's autobiographical trilogy, following Childhood and Boyhood. It was first published in the popular Russian literary magazine Sovremennik. Childhood: Childhood is the first published novel by Leo Tolstoy, released under the initials L. N. in the November 1852 issue of the popular Russian literary journal The Contemporary. It is the first in a series of three novels and is followed by Boyhood and Youth. Published when Tolstoy was just twenty-three years old, the book was an immediate success, earning notice from other Russian novelists including Ivan Turgenev, who heralded the young Tolstoy as a major up-and-coming figure in Russian literature. This collection also consists of other books: An Old Acquaintance, Boyhood, Esarhaddon, King of Assyria, Evil allures, but good endures, Father Sergius, Ivan the Fool, Little Girls Wiser Than Men, Master and Man, The Cossacks, The Death of Ivan Ilych, The Imp and the Crust, The Young Tsar, There are No Guilty People, Where Love is, There God is Also, Work, Death, and Sickness.
